Wildland managers have been masticating (or shredding) pinyon and juniper trees in Utah since about 2003. While shredding is implemented primarily to reduce canopy fuels and allow easier wildfire suppression, there are a number of other potential advantages.  Some of these include increased soil water and nutrient availability and increased herbaceous cover and maintenance of shrubs.
