This study was one of the first investigations to measure sense of community relative to wildland fire issues. Using a random sample of households in 12 Colorado counties, this project was built on a previous survey of Colorado residents. Study goals were to explore the extent to which respondents engage in specific firewise behaviors (defensible space and firewise construction) and examine barriers to implementation, and to assist wildland fire managers in developing risk reduction programs through improved understanding of residents' perception of their roles and responsibilities.
